Health and Dental Plan Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a question about your Health and Dental Plan? This should help answer some of your questions.

Please stop by your Student's Union office, Room 150a in the cafeteria for more information or to pick up forms.

What is the Health and Dental Plan?
On March 29 and 30, 2006, students voted to increase the Emily Carr Students' Union membership dues for full-time students by 242.00 per year in order to provide students with an extended health and dental plan. The Plan provides students with coverage for health services, paramedical services, prescription drugs, dental services, vision services, and medical items as well as travel insurance (up to 180 days).

Am I included in the Plan?
The plan is mandatory and includes all Fall 2010 students enrolled in nine credits or more. The benefit period for this year is from September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011 inclusive.

I am a part-time student. Am I eligible to be included?
Part-time students may opt-in to the Plan by completing an Application for Supplementary Insurance, available through the Students' Union office, and making a payment for $223.00 for the annual premium.

Can I add my family/spouse/partner to the Plan?
Students may add their partner and/or dependants to the plan by completing an Application for Supplementary Insurance, available through the Students' Union office, and paying the $223.00 annual premium.

I am already covered through my parents, partner, or place of employment. How can I opt-out of coverage?
If you already receive extended health coverage through another source, you may opt out of the plan by providing proof of alternative coverage. Please complete an opt-out form, available through the Students' Union office, or opt-out online at the Student Centre at www.greenshield.ca. Opt-outs must be completed before 4:00 pm on September 30, 2010. Students who opt out of the plan will have the fee amount credited back to their Emily Carr account and can request a refund cheque from Financial Services.

Students who opt-out of the plan but wish to join at a later time must complete the opt-in process. Visit the Students' Union office for further details.

I already have MSP. Am I still included in the Health and Dental Plan?
The Health and Dental Plan provides extended health coverage, above and beyond the provincial health coverage. Enrolment in the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) or any other provincial or territorial plan does NOT constitute equivalent coverage for the purpose of opting out.
You should not cancel your MSP coverage while covered under the Students' Union health and dental plan. However, as a student, you may qualify for a subsidy of your provincial health care costs (Premium Assistance). More information is available at www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca or by calling BC Medical Services Plan at 604.775.0303

Where can I find out what benefits are covered under the Plan?
A detailed outline of benefits is available at www.greenshield.ca/studentcentre.

I would like to make a claim right away. How can I do this?
Your coverage begins as of September 1, 2010. There is a blackout period for first time plan members between the months of September and October while University enrolment data is verified and finalized for transfer to the insurer, Green Shield Canada. If you are new to the plan you are covered during this period, but you will have to pay out-of-pocket and save your receipts for reimbursement.
If you pay up front for any covered services during September and October, you can pick up and complete a Claim Form to be reimbursed for those costs. Stop by the Student's Union office for a Claim Form or download forms at www.greenshield.ca

If you are a returning student and have been on the plan in the past there is no blackout period and you can make claims through September and October.

I am planning to travel or go on student exchange this year. Am I still covered?
Your coverage includes out-of-country travel benefits, for up to 180 days per trip. You can download your travel card at: https://onlineservices.greenshield.ca/studentcentre/Booklets.aspx
