In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.

A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

Which side of the ideas war are you on?

2nd Annual Students' Union Clothing Swap!
Everyone Welcome
(Technically, International Women's Day is Sunday March 8th)
___________________________________________
As this event falls on a date closest to
International Women's Day , we have taken the opportunity to highlight issues that affect women. Last year the Clothing Swap highlighted the No Means No campaign to end date rape and sexual violence against women.

This year we have chosen to raise awareness of violence against aboriginal women and the Stolen Sisters campaign.

Information from the National Aboriginal Caucus of the Canadian Federation of Students: http://www.cfs-fcee.ca/aboriginal/english/campaigns.php

There is one fundamental fact: her murder was a racist and sexist act. Helen Betty Osborne would be alive today had she not been an Aboriginal woman.”
- Report of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry of Manitoba

According to Canadian government statistics, young Indigenous women are five times more likely than other women of the same age to die as the result of violence. The National Aboriginal Caucus of the Canadian Federation of Students has been active on a campaign called “Stolen Sisters” to fight violence and discrimination against Aboriginal women in Canada and to shed light on the numerous cases of violence against Aboriginal women that have gone unnoticed by governments.

The Caucus is working to push the federal government to work with Indigenous peoples’ organisations and policy to implement plans of action to ensure effective action is taken to stop violence against Indigenous women. Postcards to the Prime Minister, urging him to take action, can be signed at the event on March 5th in the South Building Main Entrance.
